Interested in working with me?
As well as being a multi-instrumentalist and performer, I have been teaching guitar for a decade now. It is one of the great joys of my life.
Lessons with me focus on:
-
Teaching beginner and intermediate guitarists how to be comfortable with their instrument and create dynamic performances
-
Helping singers build strength on the guitar to self accompany on more complicated tunes
-
Learning basic guitar and music theory to help my students effectively work with other musicians and write their own songs

Beginner and Intermediate Guitarists
So often I meet guitarists who feel very confident, know a few chords, and have been playing for years, but they don’t like the sound they get from their instrument. Sometimes this is because they haven’t really spent time making sure the chord shapes are solid, but most often it’s because there’s a lack of consistency in their strumming hand. I work with students to keep time and groove in their strumming hand so that, no matter how simple the song or exercise, we are always playing something that feels and sounds like music. Which is why we play the guitar in the first place!

Self Accompanying
Though I teach some lead guitar, I specialize in teaching rhythm guitar to musicians or singers who are looking to self accompany - play and sing at the same time. These musicians need help understanding dynamics, rhythm, and how to arrange a song for performance. Often these students also struggle with more complicated chords like bar chords so we use progressively more difficult songs to build strength in our fingers and hands to develop these skills.

Songwriting and Collaborating
While I absolutely am a music nerd and love music theory, I know it’s not everybody’s cup of tea. I only break out music theory when I believe it is either going to take my student to a much greater level with their understanding of the meaning behind the song or because explaining a theory concept will illuminate a practical problem we’ve been struggling with. I also work with a lot of students who are songwriters or who aspire to/already play in bands or with other musicians. It’s important that these students have a basic level of knowledge that helps them communicate confidently with their bandmates, producers, and other collaborators.
My students have performed on Broadway, on National Tours, in Netflix specials, at venues such as Rockwood Music Hall and The Green Room 42, and have released their own music with my help. I would love to be a part of your musical journey.
